About Keilor
Located 18 km to the north west of Melbourne CBD, Keilor is a suburban region in the city with a rough population of around 5853. While a major portion of the suburb is contained within the Brimbank City, the northern section is within the City of Hume. This section is located on flood plain of the River, and houses many market gardens. A majority of region is residential with industrial developments in neighbouring suburbs. You will find plenty of shopping centres in the area, along with some top attractions to visit. Here are a few for your liking!
Brimbank Park
Situated in the north-western suburb of Keilor, the Brimbank Park was opened in 1976 as a section of the Maribyrnong Valley Park, combined with Greenvale Reservoir Park and adjacent Horseshow Bend Children farm. The river has carved out a gorge below the Keilor Plain, with placid terraces on the southern side and a vertical bank on the northern side forming a colossal amphitheatre. The park has several picnic tables, playgrounds, gas barbecues and sheltered picnic areas. There’s a Leaping Lizard Cafe for those who didn’t bring their picnic basket. A network of cycling and walking tracks are also there, along with self-guided trails. If you are looking for some escapade, the River Trail commences at the park and follows tree-lined river to Footscray.
The wetlands region has undergone vegetation. Some of the birds you would commonly see in the park include parrots, galahs, yellow tailed thornbills, flame robins and blue-wrens. Residing in the river red gums are ring-tailed and brush-tailed possums. You can also catch a sight of swamp wallabies or a blue-tongued lizard.
The Organ Pipes National Park,
Spread across an area of 300 acres, the Organ Pipes National Park is situated in a deep gorge in the basalt, grassy Keilor plains. It was founded with an objective to conserve the native wildlife, and preserve the ecological features in the Jacksons Creek, which is a sectional of Maribyrnong Valley. The valley walls expose Pleistocene rocks, with the lavas generally known as ‘trap rock’. The park got its name from the hexagonal basalt column that were locally referred to as ‘organ pipes’.
These geological structures have been exposed with the cutting down of the Jackson Creek Valley through the trap rock. The valley’s bottom also exposes an ancient obscured creek valley, which is cut into Silurian sandstones and mudstones. Both the Silurian sedimentary rock and the prehistoric river valley lies beneath the basaltic volcanic rocks. The marine fossils are evident of their accumulation under an ancient ocean.
Maribyrnong Valley Parklands
Want to enjoy a family picnic in Keilor? The Maribyrnong Valley Parkland is an ideal setting to have a picnic party, while you can also enjoy walks along the network of trails, bird watching canoeing and fishing, all set within the parklands. Moreover, you will find sublime birdlife right here.
The Keilor Hotel
Just like a wine becomes better with age, The Keilor Hotel is reminiscent of that fact. Built in 1840 using local bluestone, you will find the exact same walls in the bistro today, along with mouth-watering dishes and open fire places on offer. The Galway’s Arms bistro is an ideal place to enjoy dining and wining, with the Red Lion Bar still providing that level of hospitality, and not to forget refreshing the palates with cool amber liquid for more than 16 decades. If you are looking to socialise with friends or enjoy an uplifting beverage in comfortable chairs, head straight to the Cocktail Room. The room has been decorated with the Dodd’s family photos since the year 1974.

It is formed by the convergence of the Deep Creek and the Jackson Creek below Taylors Lakes, and it eventually flows into Port Philip. For up to 40000 years, the Maribyrnong River Valley has been home to Wurundjeri people of the Kulin nation.
